Getting Back in the Cockpit: A Guide for Returning Glider Pilots

Have you flown before, but it’s been a while since your last launch?

Whether life, work, or family pulled you away, the sky is still waiting — and we’d love to welcome you back.

At Trent Valley Gliding Club, we often meet people who say:

“I used to glide years ago… I really miss it.”

The good news is: it’s never too late to return to the sport you loved. Here’s everything you need to know about getting back into gliding and why now is a great time to rejoin the soaring community.

= 1. You’re Not Alone – And You’re Always Welcome

Many of our current members took long breaks from flying before returning. Whether it’s been 2 years or 20, we understand that life happens — but the love of gliding never really goes away.

At TVGC, we pride ourselves on being a friendly, supportive, and non-intimidating club. There’s no pressure, just a community of like-minded enthusiasts ready to help you get back in the air.

 2. Refresher Flights Tailored to You

You don’t need to start from scratch. Our instructors will:

We’re here to rebuild your skills, refresh your knowledge, and reignite your confidence.

You’ll be surprised how much you remember — and how quickly it all comes back once you’re flying again.

 3. What’s Changed – And What Hasn’t

Over the years, there may have been updates in:

But the fundamentals of gliding haven’t changed. You’ll still feel that same thrill on launch, the peace of soaring, and the satisfaction of a perfect circuit.

We’ll bring you up to speed on anything new — no exam stress, just hands-on support.

4. You’ve Still Got Time to Get Back in the Game

Many returning pilots assume they’ve left it too late. Trust us — you haven’t.

Whether you’re in your 40s, 60s, or beyond, gliding is a sport you can enjoy for life. It’s low-impact, deeply satisfying, and offers a wonderful sense of community.

Some of our members took their solo flight after retirement. Others have come back after decades and found new joy in the sport — and even taken up cross-country or instructing.

5. Start Small – Or Go All In

You can ease back into gliding by:

We’re flexible — whether you want to fly occasionally or train for Bronze/Cross Country endorsement again, we’ll support your journey.

Come Back to Where You Belong

If gliding was once a passion, it can be again. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting back in the cockpit, taking the controls, and realising…

“I’ve missed this more than I realised.”
